Electrode Paste Care

It's crucial to use the correct gel, whether you're using EEG electrodes, EKG electrodes, or any other electromedical application. The correct gel for your electrodes will help you get accurate measurements and reduce skin resistance, which can interfere with results. Ten20 Conductive Gel is an odorless, non-flammable conductive adhesive gel recommended for EMG, TENS and EEG procedures. It's formulated to resist breakdown by body heat and the salts found in perspiration. It will also remain thick, uniform, and conductive over prolonged wear periods.

Electrode paste (also known as Soderberg electrode paste) is a mix of carbon-based materials used to form the self-baking electrodes needed for the production of several industrially important metals. The electrodes are made in a vertical electric furnace. The paste is heated continuously to turn it into solid carbon. It consists of electrically-calcined anthracite. Other carbon-based substances can be added to enhance its properties, or it may be bound together by coal-tar pitches.

The high temperature, pressure and heat of the smelting kiln can cause a unfavorable chemistry reaction. This weakens the paste. Coking of the binder is the cause of this problem when the temperature exceeds 500 degC. If the problem isn't corrected, the mechanical strength of the electrode will deteriorate significantly and it will fall from the electrode column in a short period of time, called a soft break.

The pH electrode needs to be well maintained and properly conditioned in order to prevent this. It is good to regularly clean the pH-electrode with cleaning solution, as well as rinse it before and after measurements. Cleaning and rinsing the pH electrode will prevent contamination, remove an oxidation layer that may affect the hydration, and maintain an accurate reading.

When you're ready to attach an OpenBCI Gold Cup sensor or a Flat Disk electrode to your patient, apply a small mound of Ten20 conductive paste to the skin. Gently press the flat disc or cup sensor into the mound, and spread the paste out to maximize the surface area the sensor will "see." Ten20 is water soluble for easy clean up.
