Electrode Paste FAQ

It is important to note that the aluminum and other industries rely on continuous self-baking electrodes (also known by the name Soderberg electrodes). The electrode's main function is to carry current from the transformer into the furnace, which generates the heat needed for the metallurgical reaction.

It must have exceptional electrical conductivity and be made of highly reactive, high-quality material. It must also have sufficient mechanical strength and stability to withstand the demanding processes and operating conditions in the aluminum industry.

This is achieved by carefully formulating a paste from natural and synthetic ingredients. This paste is made from a blend of coal tar pitch with calcined petroleum. Calcined petroleum is produced by high-temperature carbonization of petroleum coke. It serves as the principal carbonaceous constituent in the paste.

It has low levels of ash, which reduces unwanted impurities. Also, it has excellent thermal stability and can withstand high temperatures such as those found in electric-arc and submerged-arc furnaces.

This electrode also boasts good conductivity to help ensure that the required amount of current can be carried by the electrode for successful metalurgical operations. In order to enhance its mechanical strength, the pitch is blended with high-reactive carbons. The electrode paste that is produced has an excellent consistency and makes it very easy for you to work with.

It provides good stickiness and adhesion so the electrode stays firmly fixed in place, without moving during tests. In EEG tests, it is important to have a consistent and reliable electrode in order to get accurate results. For these reasons, many expert technologists and technicians rely on Ten20, a conductive paste that offers the ideal balance of adhesiveness and conductivity.

Electrode pastes are usually stored and shipped in cylindrical packaging. The briquettes can be manufactured as well. The size of the briquettes is specified by the customer. The cylinders, which are usually steel strapped onto wooden pallets or covered with plastic to keep them dust-free during transport, can also be wrapped in foil. They can be shipped in bulk or in smaller quantities, depending on the customer's specific furnace information. Electrode paste, a critical component for manufacturing carbon electrodes that are used in aluminum production, is now also being utilized in many other applications. As an example, carbon electrodes are made using the exact same process for production of calcium carbide or ferroalloys.
