Pure Calcium Cored Wire Applications

To remove impurities from molten iron, increase the castability and lower costs of refinement, high-quality calcium is required. In the past, calcium was added to steel by spraying the calcium onto the ladle. But these methods cannot penetrate into the deeper position of molten steel, and they often cause burning loss. These methods also do not provide very precise composition control. This problem is solved by cored-wire. It is produced by wrapping calcium metal powder inside low carbon steel strips and then feeding into the molten iron through a wire-feeder.

In the steelmaking processes, pure calcium cored wires are used to deoxidize, desulfurize, remove inclusions and for other reasons. This is a seamless cored steel wire that consists of a strip of outer steel, an intermediary coating and sheaths of metal. Cored wires are available in different sizes depending on their steelmaking processes. You can find the calcium cored cable in 9 mm to 11.5mm sizes. Sheaths are usually between 0.6 and 0.8mm thick. The sheath can be either welded or folded. When using high performance wires such as Max-Cal, the sheath thickness may reach 1.1mm.

The amount of calcium injected can be reduced to the same level and the nozzles are not blocked. The slag is not contaminated and the operation of the system is simple.

By increasing the depth at which the wire is inserted into the steel ladle, you can increase the slag-absorption rate as well as reduce the amount of scaling.

The cored pure calcium wire's sheath is very tough, and it can handle the extreme temperatures generated by the steel molten. In this way, it is possible to prevent the cored metal wire from becoming eroded or melting by the slag of molten steel. In addition, sheaths made of steel with pure calcium can be toughened and have high strength to resist the pressure of feeding machines.
