Steel industry supply is a term that refers to commodities such as iron ores, scrap metals, and steel products. These are commodities that are bought and then sold on the market. Steel mills, steel service centers and end users use these supplies to produce finished metal products such as sheet, plate, rod, bar and tinplate. The primary supply source of these supplies is the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA). The American Iron and Steel Institute, or AISI, represents the steel industry on public policy issues. The organization also advocates steel as the preferred choice of material and provides technology development leadership.
The blast furnace is a cylinder lined with heat resistant bricks that is used by integrated steelmills to melt iron from iron ore. The blast oven is fed coke. The liquid molten steel that is produced is cast into ingots to be further processed.
The first solid product after the liquid iron has solidified in the blast furnace. This low-carbon product has excellent stamping, formability and strength. It is used in structural applications, such as bridges or building frames.
Alloy of iron and chromium to which molybdenum and nickel are added in moderate amounts to give the steel desired physical, mechanical and metallurgical qualities. Stainless Steel resists corrosion, and is strong at high temperatures.
Steel that is heated, cooled and rolled to obtain specific physical, mechanical, and metallurgical characteristics. This category of metal includes hot-rolled and rolled-cold products such a tin plate, strips, cold-rolled sheets and galvanized roofs.
Coils of steel that have been processed through a cold-rolling mill or temper mill. They may be cold rolled to improve surface finish and gauge (thickness) or annealed to remove internal stresses and achieve better formability. The coil can also be trimmed and slit.
The last stand within a mill which finishes cold-rolled sheets of steel in order to make them suitable for automobile panels. Low-carbon content is required for good stamping, forming and impact properties. The temper mill improves the surface texture and ductility of the steel for improved paint adhesion, rust resistance and impact value.
A rare alloy that is valued both for its strength when exposed to extreme temperatures and its ability conduct electricity with minimal resistance at very low temperatures. It's used in superconducting MRI magnets, particle-accelerators and some aerospace application.
