Pure Calcium Cored Wire Performance

Pure Calcium Cored Wire Performance

Cored wires have many applications in secondary metallurgy. They are used for adding ferroalloys or for treating liquid steel. The high-quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of cored wires make them a great choice. The cored wires also significantly reduce calcium consumption per ton steel, and they protect molten metal and slag from pollution.

The cored cable is composed of a rod made from pure calcium (the core), which is surrounded by an outer sheath made of steel and a lock seam that has been welded. The sheath is welded to prevent oxidation and mechanical damage of the core during feeding. It also prevents the evaporation of the core in the hot steel melt, thus reducing the consumption of Ca in the production process and improving the quality of the castings. The sheath of the welded casting is made from a cold-rolled strip that is above SPCC. The powder to sheath ratio is typically around 54g/m2. It is possible to feed the core using the existing feeding equipment of the steel casting plant, avoiding the costly and complex additions of additional lances.

It is important to take into consideration the following parameters when injecting cored wires: the speed and rhythm of the feed, the melting behaviour of the cores, the reactivity and slag penetration of the calcium, injection depth, absorption of molten steel and recovery of calcium. These factors determine the optimum metallurgical result and the efficiency of the injection.

In order to achieve the best results, the solid core pure calcium wire should be inserted into the slag at a feeding speed of 2.3 m/s. This will allow for the calcium wire to penetrate the layer of slag sufficiently, decrease the time that it takes to absorb calcium into the steel, and reduce slag contamination.
