CPC is one of the main raw materials used to produce graphitized Petroleum Coke (GPC), the product used in the smelting of iron and nonferrous alloys, casting, and forging of products.
Petroleum coke, or coke by-product, is a result of crude oil refinement. It is typically the result of a delayed coking process in the coker. The resulting product is a hard, brittle, coarse or granular solid with high fixed carbon content and low ash and sulfur content. The petcoke, after being sized is fed into the rotary kiln and heated under controlled circumstances to transform its physical characteristics. The calcination procedure removes volatile constituents and increases the carbon in the material. It produces a granular, or powdered, product that can be used for a variety of industrial applications.
The main application of calcined coke for steel melting is the production graphitized petroleum. This is followed by its use as a Carbon Flux in the manufacturing of cast steel and iron, as well as in the manufactures glass, bricks paints and other chemical.
CPC is used as a fuel in some industries, in cement kilns, and for power generation. Increasing construction and industrialization activities driven by the growing populations in developing regions, especially Asia Pacific, is expected to drive growth in the market for calcined petroleum coke.
A reliable source of high-quality green coke is vital for the success and efficiency of a calcination plant. The higher sulfur, trace metal, and trace element content of US coal, combined with the tightening SO2 emission standards, has forced calciners add SO2 scrubber technology. This is expected to continue into the future.
