Ferrosulfur Metallurgy With Calcium Cored Wire

Cored wire is an excellent and ultimate refining technology for steel making and casting. It can deoxidize, desulfurize, change the shape of inclusions, promote the floating of inclusions and purify molten steel.

The alloy cored wire is made up of a metal calcium core and an iron sheath. The core is made of a mixture of 28%-35% calcium particles and 65%-72% iron powder, covered by a cold-rolled low-carbon steel strip.

The calcium treatment in metallurgy is an important process for the steelmaking, and it can improve the quality of molten steel and the casting state. It can also change the shape of inclusions, promote their floating and purify molten steel. In addition, it can improve the use of molten steel, reduce the alloy consumption and shorten the smelting time.

In the past, calcium metal was added directly to the molten steel using spraying technology. But due to its light specific gravity and low melting point, it was easy to form bubbles in the molten steel. Cored wire is an alternative method that can overcome these problems, as the calcium-iron alloy in a sheath can be fed into the molten steel quickly. This allows the alloy to enter the lower and deeper positions of the molten steel where it can react.

As the calcium is easily oxidized in molten steel, it is essential to protect the powder additive package (deoxidizer, desulfurization agent and alloy) from direct contact with the molten metal. The cored wire is made of a low carbon steel sheath in which the powdered minerals, metals and ferroalloys are tightly encased. It is then fed into the molten steel with a wire feeding machine to melt in the depth of the molten steel.

Compared with the traditional powder additives, the cored wire is more stable. It is free from the problems of powder leakage line, uneven feeding and problem of butt of the steel strip that have caused many accidents in previous years. The world's industrial processes depend on massive amounts of sulfur in some way, making it a crucial ingredient. Elemental sulfur has a few very specialized uses -- like vulcanization of rubber for tires -- but the vast majority is turned into a single, enormously useful product: sulfuric acid. It's known as "The King of Chemicals," and for good reason: it's used to make dyes, pharmaceuticals, plastics, explosives, car batteries, and much more. Without it, most of humanity's industrial life would grind to a halt, leaving us hungry, naked, sick, and thirsty.

Sulfuric acid is made in the Claus process, named after German chemist Carl Friedrich Claus who invented it in 1883. This process takes hydrogen sulfide, a foul-smelling byproduct of the rotting of organic material, and converts it to elemental sulfur, which is much more useful. The resulting gas needs to be scrubbed before it can be released into the atmosphere, and the sulfur itself is largely converted to ferrous sulfate in a large tank called a rotary kiln.

Once the sulfate is made, it can be refined into solid sulfur, a product known as pastilles. It's pretty simple: hot liquid sulfur is pumped into a big machine called a rotoformer, which is basically a giant perforated cylinder that turns the slurry into little nubbins of yellow sulfur. Water sprayed on the underside of the conveyor belt cools it down and it becomes solid, looking a bit like lemon drops. It's then poured into piles, where it can be loaded onto trains and ships for shipment.

The steel industry has a lot of different ways of refining its raw metals, and one of the most important is called ladle treatment. The goal is to reduce the number of nonmetallic inclusions (NI), which degrade mechanical properties and cause corrosion in finished products. The conditions in which NI form in the steel melt are complex, and it's hard to get rid of all of them. However, it is possible to make them less harmful, and doing so can have a huge impact on quality.

Calcium treatment has a number of effects, including changing the inclusion morphology, inhibiting the growth of sulphide slags, and improving hot deformation behaviour by pushing inclusions away from the surface of the metal. This latter effect is particularly important in the case of high-silicon steels, where the formation of sulphide slags can be a major cause of damage to the castings during forming.

To achieve this, a core wire is used, which contains a mixture of metal calcium and iron powder, with a cold-rolled low-carbon steel strip as the sheath. The core is injected into the liquid steel at a position which does not interfere with the deoxidation process or cause inclusions in the cast metal.

This technique has proved to be a highly effective method of treating steels. A good correlation has been obtained between the calcium recovery and a number of dimensionless parameters, including the Biot number, the liquid bath temperature and the speed of calcium silicide transfer from/to the added ferromanganese. In addition, the quantity of ferromanganese required to achieve the desired calcium recovery can be significantly reduced.
