Inoculating grades of ferro silicon with strontium provide much greater chill reduction per pound of alloy added than regular inoculants. This enables foundry to reduce inoculant additions significantly and thereby lower casting shrinkage.
The inoculant alloy can be prepared industrially in a simple manner. It is also distinguished by especially good suppression of carbide precipitation.
The inoculant is used in the steel-making and casting industry. It is a powerful deoxidizer and can reduce the degree of cold, restrain formation of carbide, and slow the failure time of the castings. Its alloying elements and granularity are designed and controlled strictly, and can be adjusted according to customer’s demand.
The present invention relates to an inoculant alloy based on ferrosilicon or silicon for the manufacture of cast iron with lamellar, compact or spheroidal graphite and to a process for its preparation. The inoculant alloy of the invention is distinguished by particularly good suppression of the precipitation of carbide and by a preparation process which is industrially simple and thus has favorable costs.
Ferrosilicon barium inoculant is one of the most effective promotion elemtnts,it has a strong recession-resistant capability, can prevent inoculation and nodulizing recession, reduce shrinkage defect and improve the uniformity of fracture surface, and the low melting point, easy to be melt in inoculation processing, with little scum.
The present invention relates to an inoculant alloy based on ferro silicon or silicon for the inoculation of gray cast iron with lamellar, compact or spheroidal graphite and to a process for its preparation. It is distinguished in particular by particularly good suppression of the precipitation of carbide, and by its industrially simple preparation at favorable costs.
It can improve the alloy yield, shorten smelting time and control the composition precisely. It can purify the molten steel and partly change steel inclusion morphology, leading to better smelting condition and casting state. It can also inoculate the melt and prevent the recession of nodules.
It can make the graphite nucleation easier, reduce the cold degree, restrain the formation of carbide and improve the machinability of cast iron. The granularity and alloying elements are designed and controlled strictly, resulting in a strong recession-resistant capability and an improvement in the tensile strength of cast iron. It can also decrease the chill phenomenon, and increase the strength of the gray cast iron.

IM SR is produced in state-of-the-art submerged arc furnaces. It uses coke, scrap, and iron ore as reducing agents and steel units to produce high purity ferrosilicon. It is one of the most advanced inoculants in the industry, producing excellent cell refinement and a minimum of dross when compared to all regular inoculants.
Strontium is the most effective element to promote inoculation. It forms sulfides with lattice parameters very similar to graphite, allowing it to form the nucleating site for the graphite. Therefore, strontium bearing inoculants perform well with a large amount of chill reduction. This is particularly true in water pressure gray cast iron and corrosion-resistant cast iron. IM SR is also low in calcium and aluminum, resulting in less dross formation.
The ferro silicon strontium inoculant mainly used as casting inoculant, strontium is one of the most effective promotion element.when large undercooling degree, strontium can reduce the number of eutectic and cast iron shrinkage defects,it is very suitable for low temperature or chilled sweet ash sulfur cast iron and steam and water pressure gray cast iron.
Strontium bearing ferrosilicons perform much better than other regular inoculating grades when used on alloys containing sulfur. They require a greater chill reduction per pound of alloy added, and their use also reduces the amount of cell refining in the cast iron, resulting in less casting shrinkage problems.
