The Ma'aden Aluminium COMPANY (Mac) has signed a five-year contract with the Saudi Calcined Petroleum Coke Company (SCPC). The deal will initially provide MAC with 100,000 metric tons of calcined petroleum coke each year, and will ultimately lead to a localized CPC supply chain. The deal is part of Ma'aden's larger plan to source 320,000 tonnes of CPC each year from domestic sources.

The deal was signed between the two companies through the Saudi Arabian Mining Co. The two companies will supply each other with calcined petroleum coke and aluminium. Saudi Calcined Petroleum Coke is a major raw material for carbon anodes used in aluminium production.

SCPC produces 666,000 tons of calcined petroleum coke annually

A Saudi calcined petroleum coke company has recently been established and plans to produce 670,000 tons of CPC per year. The plant will be located in the city of Jubail II, the fourth largest petrochemical city in the world. The company will compete locally and globally, serving the needs of smelters in the region and beyond.

The company produces calcined petroleum coke primarily for the primary aluminum industry, although a large portion of it also goes into the steel industry for recarburizing purposes. Other uses for calcined petroleum coke include the manufacture of titanium dioxide, which is used in paint and plastics, sunscreens, and food coloring.

CPC is produced by heating the coke to a finishing temperature of around 1,350 degrees Celsius. Although external fuel is used for the initial start-up of the process, the vast majority of the heat required is generated by in-situ combustion of residual hydrocarbons in the coke. Oxygen is also needed to sustain the combustion. In addition to its applications in aluminum production, CPC is also a major ingredient in the production of titanium dioxide.
