A Silicon-Manganese Alloy Double Deoxidizer

A silicon-manganese alloy is a metal alloy containing 30 percent silicon. The material is created by upgrading the standard alloy, Mn, and adding the waste Si from the Fe-Si alloy industry. This metal alloy is characterized by its ability to deoxidize oxygen.

Si-Mn

Using Si-Mn alloy double deoxidizers has many benefits for the steel industry. The high-quality FeSi75 alloy has a low oxygen content and creates favourable plastic silicate inclusions in the steel. Franklin and colleagues traced the inclusions to a source within the steel melt, and found a high alumina content. They attribute this to the high content of Al in FeSi. In addition, adding FeSi to Si-Mn killed steels also increases the Al content of the steel.

Manganese

A silicon-manganese alloy (SMA) is an alloy containing silicon and manganese that is used in the smelting of steel. This alloy increases the manganese content of steel, resulting in increased strength and durability. Silicon-manganese alloys are used in a variety of applications, and their use is increasing.

Mn

A silicon-manganese alloy is made from two basic elements: silicon and manganese. The concentrations of the two elements are essential for producing a desired grade of SiMn. The chemical compositions of both manganese and silicon are given in Table III.

When the activity of the components is lower than unity, the deoxidation equilibrium moves downward.

Cost of Si-Mn

Si-Mn double deoxidizer is a material that is produced by carbo-thermic reduction of oxidic raw materials. This process is more energy-intensive than Fe-Mn production, as the furnace must reach higher temperatures to reduce silica to silicon metal. Nevertheless, the material is generally acceptable for most applications.
